How to Wash a Sleep Heavy Blanket, Cover and Pillowcase

To wash a Sleep Heavy cotton, mink or bamboo blanket, take off the removable cover, machine wash it on a gentle cycle and air dry it, and if you want to wash the weighted insert, hand wash it in cold water and air dry it.

To wash a Sleep Heavy cotton, mink or bamboo blanket, take off the removable cover, machine wash it on a gentle cycle and air dry it, and if you want to wash the weighted insert, hand wash it in cold water and air dry it. The chunky knit and the silk pillowcase have their own rules, which we cover below. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against weighted blankets for babies, so ask Sleep Heavy about its age guidance before you use one with a child. Our Sleep Heavy discount code page lists the current code and how to use it.

Take the cover off first

Sleep Heavy’s cotton, mink and bamboo blankets are two parts: an inner insert filled with fine-grade glass beads, and an outer cover. Sleep Heavy says the cover and insert are held together with rope ties, and that a zipping system lets you remove the cover for washing.

  • Lay the blanket flat, open the zip and undo the ties that hold the insert in place.
  • Slide the insert out. It carries almost all of the weight, so lift it with care.
  • Wash the cover on its own, and only wash the insert when it actually needs it.

Washing the cover and the insert

For the cotton weighted blanket, the mink weighted blanket and the bamboo blanket, Sleep Heavy gives the same care instructions:

  • Cover: removable and machine washable. Use a gentle cycle and air dry.
  • Insert: hand wash with cold water and air dry.

An insert full of glass beads holds a lot of water, so give it plenty of time to dry all the way through before you put the cover back on. Refitting a damp insert traps moisture inside the cover. A clean, dry blanket also matters for Sleep Heavy’s policies: returns must be clean with no debris or pet fur, and its warranty does not cover stains or soiled blankets.

The chunky knit is different

The chunky knit weighted blanket has no separate cover. Sleep Heavy says it is hand woven from 100% cotton with no synthetic fillings, so you wash the whole blanket. Its care instructions are:

  • Hand wash, or use a gentle warm machine wash in cool water (30 degrees Celsius).
  • Wash it on its own on a delicate or permanent press cycle.
  • Make sure your washing machine can handle the weight of the blanket before you try.
  • Do not hang it to dry. Dry it flat, or tumble dry on low for 2 to 3 drying cycles.

Sleep Heavy puts the no hanging rule down to the chunky knit structure, so lay it flat on a clean surface or use the dryer on low as it describes.

Caring for the silk pillowcase

Sleep Heavy’s 19 momme mulberry silk pillowcase needs a gentler routine than the blankets. Sleep Heavy recommends:

  • Hand washing with a pH neutral detergent in 30 degree water.
  • Or a delicate machine wash at 30 degrees inside a delicates wash bag.
  • Air drying out of direct sunlight.
  • No bleach and no tumble drying.
  • Ironing on low heat, with steam or dry.

One buying note: Sleep Heavy says a pillowcase can be returned for a refund only within 30 days and before use, unused and in original condition. Once you have washed and used it, that option is gone.

Spare covers make washing easier

Sleep Heavy sells spare covers for its adult blankets in Single, Double and King/Queen, in grey cotton and several mink colours. It says many customers keep a spare so they can swap between mink and cotton through the year. A spare also means the blanket stays in use while the other cover dries. Check that the spare matches your blanket size before you order, because the covers are sold by size.

A simple routine works well: wash the cover you have been using, fit the spare straight away, and put the clean cover away once it is fully dry. The insert only needs washing now and then, by hand, as Sleep Heavy describes above.
