Sleep Heavy Cotton vs Mink vs Chunky Knit: What to Know

The main difference between Sleep Heavy's blankets is how they are built: the cotton, mink and bamboo blankets are a bead-filled insert inside a removable cover, while the chunky knit is hand woven from 100% cotton with no filling at all.

The main difference between Sleep Heavy’s blankets is how they are built: the cotton, mink and bamboo blankets are a bead-filled insert inside a removable cover, while the chunky knit is hand woven from 100% cotton with no filling at all. Below is what Sleep Heavy lists for each one, and how that plays out when you own it. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against weighted blankets for babies, so ask Sleep Heavy about its age guidance before you use one with a child. Cotton

The cotton weighted blanket has a cotton insert filled with fine-grade glass beads and a removable 100% cotton cover, which Sleep Heavy describes as cool and crisp. It comes in grey, in Single, Double and King/Queen, and in 6.8kg or 9kg (King/Queen is 9kg only). Sleep Heavy says rope ties keep the insert in place and a zip lets you take the cover off to wash it.

Mink

The mink weighted blanket uses the same cotton insert with glass beads, under a mink cover that Sleep Heavy calls luxuriously soft. The store lists blue, grey and white mink, in the same sizes and weights as the cotton blanket. The product page does not state what fibre the mink cover is made from, so ask Sleep Heavy if that matters to you. The page does list OEKO-TEX certification for chemical safety.

Bamboo

The bamboo blanket swaps both layers: Sleep Heavy lists a bamboo insert with natural glass beads and a bamboo cover, which it describes as silky soft and eco-friendly. It comes in grey bamboo, in the same three sizes and two weights, with King/Queen again in 9kg only. Like the others, it has a removable, machine washable cover.

Chunky knit

The chunky knit weighted blanket is the odd one out. Sleep Heavy says it is:

  • Hand woven from 100% natural cotton
  • All fabric, with no synthetic fillings or materials
  • Certified under STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX
  • Sold with a Sleep Heavy canvas carry bag

It comes in six colours (grey, blue, green, pink, natural and terracotta) but in one size and one weight, 6.8kg. With no beads inside, the weight comes from the thick cotton knit itself, and Sleep Heavy pitches it as a blanket that also adds style to a room. Because there is no removable cover, you wash the whole blanket, and Sleep Heavy says it must be dried flat or tumble dried on low, never hung.

Which one suits you

Since the weights on offer are the same across cotton, mink and bamboo, the choice among those three comes down to the feel of the cover and the colour. A few practical points help narrow it down:

  • You want to change the feel through the year. The cotton and mink blankets share a cotton insert, and Sleep Heavy sells spare covers in grey cotton and mink. It says many customers swap between the two through the year, so one blanket can wear either cover.
  • You want a blanket that doubles as decor. The chunky knit is the one with colour choices beyond grey, blue and white, and it has no separate insert to manage.
  • You need King/Queen or 9kg. Choose cotton, mink or bamboo. The chunky knit is 6.8kg and one size only.
  • You want the simplest wash. The cotton, mink and bamboo covers come off and go in the machine on a gentle cycle, while the chunky knit is washed whole and dried flat.

Whichever fabric you pick, the delivery and return terms are the same. Sleep Heavy offers free delivery anywhere in New Zealand and free shipping to Australia, dispatched from its Christchurch warehouse. Its shipping page says orders usually arrive in 2 to 3 business days, while its product pages say roughly 2 to 5 business days, so allow the longer window. Sleep Heavy gives a 30 day refund or exchange (one per household, blanket clean and as new, return shipping at your cost) and a 5 year warranty against manufacturing defects for the original buyer.
