Privacy policy

We collect very little about you, and we say exactly what it is. The short version is below. The details follow.

Who we are

This policy covers thecodeplanet.com, run by The Code Planet (“we”, “us”). If you have a question about your data, use our contact form and choose “A privacy request”.

What we collect, and why

When you visit a page

Like every website, our hosting provider and Cloudflare, the network that delivers and protects our pages, receive standard technical information when your browser asks for a page: your IP address, your browser type and the page you requested. It is used to deliver the page and to protect the site against abuse and attacks, and it is kept by those providers for a limited time under their own policies. We do not use it to identify you.

When you say whether a code worked

We save which code it was, whether you said yes or no, and the time. We do not save your name, your email or your IP address with your answer.

To stop the same person answering again and again, we keep a scrambled, one-way fingerprint made from your IP address and browser for 24 hours, then delete it. It cannot be turned back into your IP address.

When you send us a message

The contact form asks for your name, your email address, a topic, optionally a store name, and your message. We use these only to read and answer your message. Your message is stored in our website’s admin area, where only the people who run the site can see it, and a copy is emailed to our inbox so we see it quickly.

Messages are deleted automatically 12 months after they arrive. You can ask us to delete yours sooner at any time.

What is stored in your browser

Two small things are saved in your own browser’s storage, never sent to us, and never used for tracking:

• Whether you chose the light or dark look for the site.
• Your answer about a code, for one day, so the page shows your answer instead of asking again.

You can clear them at any time by clearing your browser’s site data. Cloudflare may also set a strictly necessary security cookie to tell real visitors apart from automated attacks.

Other services our pages use

• Google Fonts. Our typefaces are loaded from Google’s servers, so Google receives your IP address when your browser fetches them. See Google’s privacy policy.
• Cloudflare delivers our pages and protects the site. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
• Stores. When you follow a link to a store, you leave our site and the store’s own privacy policy applies to anything you do there.

We do not use Google Analytics or any other analytics service, and we do not show advertising. If that ever changes, we will update this page first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Where our readers are, and where data goes

We write for shoppers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, across Europe, and in India, Japan, Singapore and South Korea. Wherever you read us from, we handle your data in the same careful way this page describes.

The little data we hold may be processed outside your own country, by our hosting provider and by Cloudflare, the services named on this page. We collect so little that very little ever moves, and we never send it anywhere else.

The legal basis for using your data

Where data protection laws such as the UK and EU GDPR apply, we rely on our legitimate interests in running a secure and working website, in counting reader answers fairly, and in replying to people who contact us. You can object to any of these, as described below.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

• ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
• ask us to correct it or delete it;
• object to how we use it, or ask us to limit it;
• complain to your local data protection authority.

These rights come from the privacy laws that protect our readers, including the EU and UK GDPR, Switzerland’s Federal Act on Data Protection, the California Consumer Privacy Act, Canada’s PIPEDA, Australia’s Privacy Act 1988, New Zealand’s Privacy Act 2020, India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information, Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act and South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act. We give every reader the same rights, whichever law applies to them.

To use any of these rights, send us a privacy request. We will reply within one month. We do not sell or share personal information, as those terms are used in California privacy law, and never have.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us a message, tell us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and the date at the top of it before the change takes effect.
