The main factors:
- Fabric content. 100% cotton tends to shrink more than cotton and polyester blends such as 50/50 or 60/40.
- Pre shrinking. Many makers wash or treat fabric before cutting, so most shrinkage happens before you buy. Manufacturers use specific pre shrinking processes for exactly this reason.
- Water temperature. Hot water speeds up fiber contraction.
- Dryer heat. A hot tumble dry is usually the biggest single cause of shrinking.

Before washing

- Use a mild detergent without bleach.
- Go easy on fabric softener, which some print makers advise against.
Drying
- Air dry, hung or laid flat, whenever you can. This is the safest option.
- If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat and take the shirt out while it is still slightly damp.
- Avoid high heat entirely.
